AI video did not make directing obsolete. It moved where the work happens. Instead of spending budget on shoot days, an AI commercial spends it on planning, generation and finishing. Here is what changes at each stage — and what does not.
Pre-production
Traditional: casting, location scouting, permits, crew and equipment booking, a shooting schedule.
AI: a script, a shot list and a designed keyframe for every shot. Characters, products and locations are defined as references before any video is generated, so they stay consistent from the first shot to the last.
The shoot
Traditional: one or more shoot days. Whatever is not captured on the day is lost, or means booking again.
AI: each shot is generated, reviewed and regenerated until it works. Changing a shot after feedback does not need a new shoot day — which is why AI suits fast campaigns and pitch films.
The product
This is where AI needs the most care. A real bottle on set is always correct; a generated bottle may drift — a wrong label, a different cap, a logo that melts. Product-led commercials therefore lock the product from packshots or a 3D model and check it shot by shot, finishing difficult shots in 3D or compositing. More in how to keep a product consistent across AI shots.
Post-production
Almost identical: edit, music, sound design, voice-over, colour grade, titles and end card. AI footage needs the same finishing as filmed footage — often more, because shots made with different models have to be matched into one look.
Versions and localisation
This is where AI wins clearly. Once characters, product and look are locked, new hooks, aspect ratios, seasons and language versions are made from the same assets instead of new shoots.
When to choose which
Choose a traditional shoot when the film depends on a real person’s performance, close-up dialogue or a real place that matters to the story. Choose AI when the idea needs worlds that are expensive or impossible to film, when speed matters, or when you need many versions. Many of the best recent spots mix both.
